[079/365] – Cold Flame

Cold Flame

Tonight I cut the big candle I have in half, so I could get a shot of the flames from directly to the side. I never use the candle other than for photography fun, so I don’t really mind that I’m destroying it bit by bit :) Maybe next time I’ll cut the other half of the stuff off, and have the flames flying free in the air.

I liked the shape of the central flame on this one. I tried a ton of different settings, different f/stops and different shutter speeds. I like the lower f/5.6 that this one is, because the background is a bit blurry, in the f/8 and f/11 shots and above, it’s very sharp and clear, and I think it distracts from the flames themselves.

[064/365] – Burned Out Window

Burned Out Window

After feeding Gianna this morning, I went out for a photowalk. I wandered further than I have been going lately to find some new stuff to shoot. I did find a playground, further on from the graveyard I found last night. I took a few shots there, then wandered down Highland Ave. to a small park there. On the way back to my house I decided to check out what is left of that building that burned in the huge fire a few weeks back. I climbed up the hill behind it and got this shot. I love the way the pile of debris is lit up in the bottom right. The stark contrast of the white background and the black frame and border really helps the mood of the photo I think.

Sad that I tried to wander far away and still ended up liking the picture of the building practically next door the best.

Oh, I also saw one of the cats that has gone missing, it’s hanging out around back of the building.

I also got a few great shots of Boston from the hill I climbed as well, so it wasn’t all bad!

[034/365] – Candle

CandleWhile surfing the web today I saw a great Project365 with this cool picture of a candle and decided I wanted to play with some candle shots tonight. Sadly, I don’t have a single stick candle like that, so all I had to play with was my big 3 wick candle. I couldn’t replicate the shot from his site, but I did end up with a neat effect I think. I spent a long time playing with different shutter speeds and different apertures. I ended up using the TV in the living room as a slight blue tinge on this shot. I’m a fan :)
