[084/365] – Hancock Building

Hancock Building

Today I had a 2 hour Italian lesson with a tutor at the Boston Public Library. I was excited to get into Boston so I could take some photos of some new and different subjects.

I took a bunch of new shots before heading to the front of the library to wait for my tutor to arrive. This was my first lesson, so I didn’t even know what she looked like, luckily she found me, and we went into the library. It was great to start using my italian knowledge again, it’s SO rusty however. I kept making so many mistakes, things I used to just know.

This shot of the Hancock Building was taken just before heading to the library, but I really really like it. The background of the building is good, a nice gray gradient. The glass has a great shine to it. I’m really happy with this shot.

If you want to know more about the building, http://www.galinsky.com/buildings/hancockboston/index.htm is a good link. For instance, there was a huge issue when it was first put up, that the glass plates would fall off sometimes. That hasn’t happened since the 1970′s but it certainly was scary. Now all the windows are securely in place.

[082/365] – Rainy Park Bench

Rainy Park Bench

Today was my first day back to work in… 4 weeks. Man was that ever rough. I’m exhausted.

At least it wasn’t a very stressful day at work, I had to dig through the 4000 emails I had in my inbox and various other boxes. In fact, I still have about 900 ticket emails to read, those ones take the longest, since I have to actually pay attention to them.

Todays shot was taken of a park bench on the way home near Mission Hill. I tried to get some good pictures of raindrops hanging from the bench, but without a macro lens, it’s not gonna work well. So I took some other environmental shots, and decided I liked this shot of the top of the bench. I like the lines going diagonally top left to bottom right and the opposing lines of the bench itself.

[071/365] – Boston Skyline from Malden

Boston Skyline from Malden

My parents came by today to see Gianna again, my mother is baby crazy! ;) They were nice enough to bring us some lunch, and buy us a chicken pot pie and some veggies too. Thanks mom!

I have been wanting to take pictures of the Boston skyline from Malden for a while now. From the hill to the side of my house, I have a nice clear view. I set up my tripod and found a few views through the trees, and took a bunch of shots. I couldn’t get any good shots with the Pru in it, but this does have the Zakim bridge in it. That’ll have to do!

I set the f-stop up nice and high, to 32 so I could get nice long exposures. I think it turned out well!

[042/365] – Storrow Drive

Storrow Drive

Today was a VERY busy day. We went and did a lot of shopping for the baby. I bought the mattress for the crib, a bunch of sheets, some blankets, a Winnie the Pooh comforter/crib bumper/sheet/dust ruffle set, and we drove to Worcester to get a couple giant bags of clothes from Merri’s friend.

Then, we used a gift certificate Merri had won to go to Bistro 5, in Medford. It’s a way fancier place than I thought, I was VERY underdressed. Oh well!

After that, I experimented with “light painting” – using a flashlight or LED to draw in front of the camera during a VERY long exposure (in this case 30 seconds). Some turned out ok, but not awesome. Then, we headed into Boston, and I spent far too long trying to get some long exposure shots of Storrow Drive. I really like this shot, but there is some lens flare that I’m not happy with.

[040/365] – Boston Power Station

Boston Power Station

On the way down my front stairs this morning, I was confronted with this sight, a power station in Boston sending steam far up into the sky. There is also a great layer of haze across the horizon.
